BIM 5D® — We´re building the future!
Modern construction projects can be designed, built and operated more efficiently and with higher quality when knowledge is shared quickly and transparently. With BIM 5D®, we have developed a new digital planning method for the construction sector, for STRABAG and for our clients that involves all project participants from the start, thus facilitating the interdisciplinary analysis of data and correlations and so increasing the possibility for early error detection.

BIM 5D® — Design, build and operate
Building Information Modelling is a model-based planning method to design, build and operate construction projects with the aim of optimising the transfer of knowledge, the quality of the result and the efficiency of the project participants.
All relevant data are digitally captured, combined and linked over the entire lifecycle of a construction project. The result is a comprehensible, transparent and resilient information network for all project participants.
BIM models provide a visual representation of how a project changes as it progresses, which materials are required in which quantities at what time, and what consequences could arise from late changes to the design.
On the basis of this multidimensional data model, BIM 5D® makes possible a level of security in terms of cost, design and scheduling that has never before been seen in the building and construction industry – and it does so at an early stage in the process. Missing information and conflicts beyond the individual trades and disciplines can be identified already in the design stage. This helps to avoid expensive construction errors and to plan improvements without impacting the scheduled construction time.

STRABAG is setting standards
STRABAG has been advancing the vision of a “digital construction site” since the late 1990s. Over the years, BIM has been developed within the company under the name of BIM 5D® and has already been successfully implemented in several projects. The “5D” stands for the 3D model + time (4D) + process data (5D), thus adding all relevant process information to the product-oriented building information model. STRABAG is working with industry bodies to merge the company-specific variants of BIM into industry-wide standardisation initiatives.

BIM 5D® in the design phase
Already during the design phase, geometric conflict analyses and virtual construction animations show to what extent the design and build considerations are ready for implementation or capable of improvement. In this way, most of the potential problems can be solved by comparing the knowledge of all project participants by means of the virtual model.
Here BIM 5D® stands out due to its many possibilities for end-to-end communication and for closing knowledge gaps to allow a new level of team, quality and cost certainty.
## TEXTBLOCK 6 ##
BIM 5D® during realisation
In the realisation phase, the digital process chains across all areas of work allow BIM 5D® to increase efficiency, transparency and cooperation, making it of enormous logistic support. Anyone can clearly see at any time how far a project has progressed, which material is required where and when, and how much something costs.
The same is true for scheduling certainty. BIM 5D® makes it possible to use the building data model to constantly visualise the scheduling and to review its plausibility in the process.
## TEXTBLOCK 7 ##
BIM 5D® during operation
BIM 5D® also makes work easier during building operations. The virtual navigation offers efficient access to all information that is stored and linked within the model. Just 20 % of a building’s lifecycle costs accrue during construction. The remaining 80 % affect facility management. Using BIM 5D® here, however, requires first comparing the real object with its virtual representation. The use of laser scanning also helps to create building data models from already completed structures in order to take advantage of BIM 5D® in the operate phase.

Career oportunities in BIM 5D®
New skills are needed. On the one hand, a game-changing innovation like BIM 5D® creates new job profiles. On the other hand, the new digital possibilities also impact existing professions. Surveyors no longer walk the length of a construction site but use drones to work from above. Excavator operators no longer orient themselves using markings on the ground but with their built-in tablet.
At STRABAG, we are already training the next generation using the latest standards for the planning and execution of BIM 5D® project. It is our ambition to make the construction industry in general, and our company in particular, more attractive for young people.

New occupational field „BIM Management“
The exact benefit of using BIM 5D® always depends on the specific requirements and conditions of the project at hand. STRABAG has therefore created a separate position to ensure the optimal, project-specific implementation of BIM 5D®: the BIM manager.
The BIM manager assists the design coordination and functions as a catalyst to optimise the workflow of the project participants by working out strategies – a “BIM Execution Plan” – for the coordination and implementation of the processes. This is done in coordination with the client and all project participants, of course.

Our BIM 5D® for your project
In building construction, civil engineering or transportation infrastructures, an end-to-end digital project requires comprehensive, end-to-end management by a BIM manager.
The use of models for specific BIM services only makes sense if the necessary structuring and logical set-up of these models remains available for use in subsequent project phases. It is therefore of benefit to include the relevant project participants in the process as early as possible.
For this reason, we offer a broad BIM 5D® service portfolio for all three phases of the project in building construction, civil engineering and transportation infrastructures. Choose from:
